If you've been struggling with a narcissist, or just with your relationship with that person, the articles here may be of help. We've written about different kinds of relationships, because while loving a narcissist in a romantic relationship is hard, being the child of one is even harder. And while employees of narcissistic bosses can always just go find a new job, sometimes it is better to get armed with the facts about this personality disorder and learn to hold your ground. The question most people in relationships with narcissists have is if narcissists can recover. There are plenty of examples of this happening, but the vast majority of narcissists will never believe anything is wrong with them. They will put the blame squarely on you, and they have the skills to do this with astonishing effectiveness. In fact, most people in relationships with narcissists will go on for months or years blaming themselves. These are the perfect partners for narcissists, and they know how to spot them. Do keep in mind that narcissists are not inherently evil people. Though their tactics for living and relating to others are pretty questionable, they do not do these things just to be bad. They simply do not know any other way to operate. That is why narcissists can be such hard nuts to crack, even if they ever do show up at a counselor or psychologist's office. Their disorder protects them very, very well. The truth is that you may never be able to change your narcissist. But you can change yourself, and how you relate to the narcissist you have to deal with, whether it is for love or money. It takes a lot of time for some people to really come to terms with the idea that they will never "fix" a narcissist, but if you can let go of the idea and start to understand this personality disorder and how to manage it, you'll end up much, much happier. Oh, and changing your behavior is also the only way you will ever change the narcissist, should that happy event ever occur. |
